Do Dental Implants Feel Different Than Natural Teeth?

In the past, we had few options for treating missing teeth. Thus, many patients dealt with gaps or used ill-fitting dentures that were uncomfortable and inconvenient simply because they had no other choices. Fortunately, patients have a wider range of restoration options nowadays, from realistic-looking partial or full dentures, bridges, and dental implants. The latter have become more and more common in recent years. Because our patients often have questions about the benefits of dental implants, our team wants to provide you the information you need to determine whether a dental implant is the right choice for your smile.

What Are Dental Implants?

With advances in modern dentistry, dental implants have evolved to seamlessly blend in with your natural teeth and allow you to perform all the regular functions of your mouth with efficiency and comfort, from talking and laughing to chewing and smiling. This incredible dental treatment consists of a dental crown that is attached to a biocompatible titanium rod, which acts as a replacement tooth root, placed in your jaw.

What Is the Dental Implant Process?

This treatment involves two steps in our office that result in a permanent, natural-looking solution for missing teeth:

  1. The first step in receiving a dental implant is undergoing oral surgery to place the titanium post in your jaw. This provides the anchor for your dental crown.
  2. Once the surgical site heals and the post is integrated into your jawbone, we attach a custom-made crown to the post that looks and functions just like your natural teeth.

Will Anyone Notice My Dental Implant?

After your dental implant treatment is complete, no one will notice your dental implant except for you. We carefully match the color and shape of your dental crown to match your natural teeth, so you’ll feel confident flashing your smile in pictures! Most of our patients report feeling no difference between their dental implant and their natural teeth.

How Do I Care for My Dental Implant?

Although it can’t get decay because it is an artificial tooth, you’ll care for your dental implant just like your natural teeth: brush twice daily for two minutes each time, floss each day, and visit our office regularly for cleanings and exams. Proper oral hygiene will promote healthy gums, which are essential to keep the implant firmly attached. With superb care, your dental implant can last for decades.
